Fireworks Horror: Surgeons Report Increase in Amputation Cases After New Year
Cosmetic surgeons in the Netherlands treated a sharply increasing number of fireworks victims during New Year's Eve, with many suffering severe and life-altering injuries, including amputations, according to national medical data.
The Dutch Association for Plastic Surgery (NVPC) reported that 93 patients were treated for injuries caused by fireworks, compared to 62 cases last year. The organization warned that the trend towards more serious injuries has continued unabated, largely due to illegal fireworks.
More than two-thirds of the injured were aged eighteen or younger. The victims were almost all male, and in most cases, the injuries occurred while they were igniting fireworks themselves. Only ten patients were bystanders, while illegal fireworks were involved in three out of four incidents.
Plastic surgeon Anke Katrin van de Kar stated that the rise in serious injuries is very concerning, especially among young people. Surgeon Ernst Smeets revealed that doctors had to amputate twelve nearly complete or complete hands, in addition to many finger amputations, bone fractures, tendon injuries, burns, and serious facial injuries. Many of these injuries are expected to leave permanent scars.
Not all injuries occurred on New Year's Eve itself, as about 30% of patients were treated before December 30. NVPC expects additional cases in the coming weeks and expressed hope that the national fireworks ban will be implemented this year, reducing the number of victims in the future.
