Caught in the act: Police stop open drug trade in Mariahilf
The police intervened in the Vienna-Mariahilf area to stop a drug deal on the street on Wednesday morning, resulting in the arrest of one man and charges against another. The incident occurred on Gumpendorfer Street where officers from the Fünfhaus city police observed a suspicious exchange.
The officers noticed two men standing opposite each other with their heads bent, while it appeared that one was handing money to the other. The observation indicated that a drug deal was taking place openly in broad daylight.
When the police intervened, the two men were searched. The suspect, a 36-year-old man, was found with several pills of drug substitutes in addition to cash amounts. The other man, also 36 years old, is believed to have purchased two pills from him during the exchange.
The main suspect has been placed under arrest by order of the Public Prosecutor's Office in Vienna and has been temporarily transferred to a correctional facility.
The second man was not arrested, but he was charged with a purchasing-related offense. This case highlights the ongoing challenges faced by authorities in combating open drug trade on the streets of Vienna.
