A woman is shot in Essen, suspected of a clan conflict
The German city of Essen witnessed a shooting incident in broad daylight, where a woman was shot in the leg while walking in the city center. The incident occurred near the city center, causing panic among passersby who quickly alerted the police.
Upon the arrival of the emergency teams, the injured woman was found lying on the sidewalk and first aid was administered to her. The police have launched an extensive campaign to search for the perpetrator who fled the scene after the shooting.
The police spokesperson stated that there are "initial indications" that the incident may be related to disputes within what is known as the "tribal environment" or what is called Clanmilieu. The authorities have not provided additional details so far.
The term Clankriminalität is used in Germany to refer to crimes that arise within ethnically closed sub-communities, often from large families of Turkish or Arab descent, especially in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The police have recently noticed an increase in the activity of Syrian families in this context, and the city of Essen is considered one of the areas that sees a concentration of this phenomenon.
Nevertheless, the use of the term Clankriminalität sparks controversy in political and social circles, as critics argue that it leads to the stigmatization of entire groups based on their family or ethnic background.
