Get out, Germans: A wave of hostility in Mallorca
Unknown individuals wrote anti-German slogans on cars and shops in the small town of Santanyi located in the southeast of Mallorca Island. Among the phrases written in red were: "Germans go home" and "foreign buyers to hell". These writings appeared on dozens of shops owned by Germans, as well as on cars with foreign plates. The local police confirmed these incidents to the "German News Agency" after they were reported by the "Mallorca Zeitung" newspaper.
Santanyi is considered one of the favorite places for Germans in Mallorca, where many of them own second homes, and some manage shops in the area. Stickers saying "Germans go home" have also been placed on cars with German license plates.
One of the affected estimated the number of shops that were vandalized to be between 20 and 30. He stated in an interview with the newspaper: "After 34 years of living here, paying taxes, and employing nine staff members currently, it is shocking to face this level of hatred."
In recent years, there has been an increasing hostile atmosphere in Mallorca towards tourists and foreign property owners.
Periodic demonstrations are organized in which thousands participate to protest the housing crisis, often accompanied by verbal or symbolic attacks against foreign visitors. However, authorities and tourism bodies emphasized that these actions represent a minority. The hotel union Fehm stated: "Those who harass guests lose all credibility."
