Dutch shelters under criticism: Ukrainian refugees face unsafe conditions

The national commissioner and the children's complaints commissioner raised serious concerns about the living conditions of Ukrainian refugees in the Netherlands, warning that human dignity is threatened in the country's refugee reception facilities, with an urgent need for immediate action.

Officials reported that long-term stays in shelters, often in converted office buildings, put significant pressure on residents. Privacy is limited, and shared facilities for cooking and cleaning affect the well-being of the residents. Many facilities are unsuitable for long-term accommodation.

Shelter staff expressed their concern about the children, pointing to the lack of psychological support and education that does not meet their needs. Refugees also reported feeling uncertain about their future and experiencing stress due to unsuitable living conditions.

Many residents have been relocated to remote shelters with poor services, causing psychological stress on families. One resident pointed out that the move could severely affect his two-year-old child, who is used to a calm and familiar environment.

The commissioners recorded 110 complaints this year, including issues such as room sharing, deterioration of health facilities, and lack of cooking spaces. They are urging Dutch municipalities and temporary Minister of Housing Mona Keijzer to take urgent action to improve the conditions for Ukrainian refugees.
