Hairdresser bills haunt Deputy Chancellor Bäbler in Parliament

Austrian Vice Chancellor Andreas Babler (SPÖ) is facing renewed political pressure after the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) demanded a detailed disclosure of his use of hairdressers, beauticians, and style consultants since taking office. This issue comes alongside questions about his recent official trip to the United States, where the Freedom Party is pushing for more transparency regarding the costs.

Earlier in September, Babler traveled to New York and Washington as the Minister of Culture. His agenda included the return of musical manuscripts from an exiled Austrian composer and a high-profile visit to the Metropolitan Museum. However, the Freedom Party quickly seized on the trip, describing it as "lavish," and submitted a parliamentary inquiry that included 14 detailed questions about expenses, funding sources, travel class, number of companions, and environmental impact. Babler has until November 19 to respond to these questions.

At the same time, another case has resurfaced. In June, Babler admitted to using the services of hairdressers and beauty experts, but he said at the time that the invoices had not yet been issued. The Freedom Party refused to drop the case. Its Secretary General, Michael Schneideritz, submitted an additional inquiry demanding precise details about the costs, invoices, and reasons for these expenses.

The new inquiry includes six direct questions, including: How much has been spent on beauty experts, hair stylists, and style consultants since taking office? How many times have he and his office members used these services? What is the share of the representation budget for 2025 allocated for this purpose?
