Panic on Vienna train: Iranian causes chaos and WEGA unit intervenes forcefully
Vienna witnessed a significant security alert on Monday evening after police received a report about an armed man causing chaos inside one of the city's trains.
According to the authorities, police units rushed to the Margaretenviertel area in the Wien–Favoriten district around 6 PM, after a 27-year-old man smashed several windows inside a train carriage before barricading himself inside one of the compartments.
Upon the arrival of the police, the man was seen waving a Klappmesser (folding knife) while continuing to smash the broken windows. As the danger increased, the special operations unit WEGA was called in to support the forces on the ground. After the man disposed of the knife, the police were able to extract him from the cabin and take control of him.
The newspaper Heute reported that the suspect appeared calm for a short time after being arrested, but suddenly tried to escape by kicking and hitting police officers with his elbows and legs, resulting in injuries to two police officers during the control process.
Authorities confirmed that the suspect, a 27-year-old Iranian, has been arrested and faces charges including assault, vandalism, and resisting authorities. Investigations are still ongoing to determine the motives behind his violent behavior on the train.
