Red alert! Severe thunderstorms are sweeping through Austria
Austria experienced severe weather conditions on Sunday as thunderstorms swept through several areas, prompting meteorologists to issue a red alert in southern Burgenland. The storms caused heavy rainfall and strong winds with the possibility of small hail.
According to "Skywarn Austria", the most severe thunderstorms developed between Oberwart and Stegersbach. The border areas with Styria, especially near Fürstenfeld, also experienced scattered rain showers moving towards the south and southeast. Webcams in Bad Tatzmannsdorf captured dramatic scenes of the storm's arrival.
Although Sunday remained largely unstable, a high-pressure system coming from southwestern Europe began to influence the weather later in the day, helping to gradually calm the atmosphere, despite intermittent showers and storms continuing into the afternoon.
The detailed forecast showed that Sunday started cloudy and rainy, especially in the eastern and northern Alps. Some areas, particularly East Tyrol and Upper Carinthia, experienced sunny periods before new showers and storms formed. Temperatures ranged between 15 and 21 degrees, with stormy westerly winds increasing atmospheric disturbance.
The turbulent weather is expected to subside with the beginning of the new week. On Monday, some patches of fog and low clouds will remain in the inner Alps and the south. Later in the day, sunny weather will prevail in most parts of Austria, with a chance of showers returning in the west in the evening. Temperatures will rise to between 20 and 27 degrees, bringing back warm and pleasant weather for late summer.
