The obsession with 'weight loss injections' in Austria raises concerns among doctors

Pharmacies in Upper Austria are witnessing a sharp increase in demand for what is known as 'weight loss injections,' which were originally developed to treat diabetes but have now become widely sought after for rapid weight loss. This growing trend has raised concerns among doctors, who warn of the serious misuse of this medication.

According to the ORF Upper Austria channel, these injections were initially prescribed to help diabetes patients manage their condition. However, an increasing number of people suffering from obesity have started requesting them due to their rapid weight loss effects. This rise in popularity has turned the drug into a highly sought-after solution, although experts emphasize that it was never designed to be a lifestyle product.

Dr. Martin Klodi from the Barmherzige Brüder Hospital in Linz emphasized that these injections should be treated strictly as a medical treatment. He said: "They are a medicine — not a lifestyle product," warning of the risks when used randomly or without appropriate medical supervision.

Concerns are increasing, especially regarding its use by individuals of normal weight. Experts confirm that this medication is not suitable for those who only want to lose a few kilograms, and side effects occur more frequently in lean bodies. Therefore, misuse may pose significant health risks.

Although injections may help some patients, doctors insist that long-term weight management requires radical lifestyle changes. In Austria, about half of adults are already overweight, with men being more likely to be affected than women. Health authorities say this highlights the importance of following sustainable methods in diet and exercise rather than relying on quick fixes.
