AI Revolution in Austria: 180,000 Government Workers Face Major Workplace Transformation

Austria is preparing for a major transformation in its federal administration, where artificial intelligence is expected to significantly reshape the daily work of around 180,000 employees, improving efficiency, speed, and public service delivery.

State Secretary for Digitalization الكسندر برول described AI as a key technology to ensure long-term government efficiency, competitiveness, and innovation. With 44 percent of public employees set to retire within 13 years, authorities face a loss of expertise alongside rising demands for faster and higher-quality services.

To tackle this, a centralized “Public AI” platform (Publieke AI Platform – unified government AI system) is being developed to combine all AI projects under one structure, ensuring coordination instead of isolated solutions. This platform will support multiple applications across departments.

One of the key tools, “GovGPT,” will help employees write texts, summarize documents, and build knowledge databases, while AI will also enhance electronic files (Elektronische dossiers – digital case files) by generating structured summaries. Additionally, “KAPA” will assist in parliamentary inquiries, and “AI-SUN” already serves as a knowledge assistant using thousands of training materials.

In the next phase, AI will directly assist citizens through automated services like appointment booking (Afspraak maken – scheduling system), where chatbots will manage bookings and confirmations. This shift aims to reduce workload while delivering faster, more efficient services to the public.
