A wave of inflation hits Austria: health insurance cards and gas prices rise in November

Austria is experiencing a new wave of price increases in November, affecting nearly all aspects of daily life. From healthcare and streaming services to travel and public transport, Austrian citizens are facing several increases that will directly impact their budgets.

One of the most notable changes is the increase in the fees for the electronic health insurance card (E-Card), which will nearly double to reach 25 euros starting from November 15. This comes alongside an increase in taxes and fees, as the carbon dioxide (CO₂) tax is set to rise at the beginning of 2026, while the fees for electricity and gas networks are currently rising sharply, increasing pressure on monthly household expenses.

Online shopping is witnessing significant changes. Starting from November 20, stricter rules will apply to 'buy now, pay later' services like Klarna and PayPal. These companies will have to verify customers' ability to pay even for purchases under 200 euros. The aim is to reduce the accumulation of personal debt, but it will make quick and spontaneous purchases more difficult.

As for travelers, they will also have to adapt to a new change. Starting from November 12, Ryanair will stop using paper boarding passes in Austria. Passengers will now have to use digital boarding passes created through the 'myRyanair' app. The person who made the basic booking must access the tickets and can share them with other travelers, but practically all passengers will need a smartphone or electronic device to complete the boarding process.

Streaming services will not be immune to these increases. Spotify announced a price hike effective November 15. The individual subscription will rise from €10.99 to €12.99 per month, the Duo subscription from €13.99 to €16.99, and the Family subscription from €16.99 to €20.99. The student subscription will also increase from €5.99 to €6.99. These increases represent a rise of up to 22%, which is higher than expected.

Public transport in Vienna will see a significant price increase starting from 2026. The famous Wiener Linien annual pass, which currently costs 365 euros, will rise to 467 euros – an increase of over 100 euros. However, subscribers who have used their current pass for at least seven months can renew it in November at the old price. The new pass will start from December 1st and will be valid for a full year. Despite a small cancellation fee, this move can save a good amount for regular travelers before the new prices come into effect.

Finally, all drivers in Austria should be aware that the requirement to use winter equipment has returned as of November 1st. Driving on roads covered with snow or ice is only permitted if winter tires are used, while snow chains are only allowed on roads that are completely covered with snow. Using summer tires in these conditions poses a safety risk and fines start at around 100 euros, potentially reaching up to 10,000 euros in serious cases, in addition to possible issues with insurance companies.

With these successive increases affecting transportation, energy, and digital services, November seems to be a difficult month for Austrian families trying to balance their budgets.
