After the fall of FCAS fighter, Germany eyes ‘realistic’ future projects with France

Germany and France have effectively abandoned their long-troubled Future Combat Air System (FCAS) fighter jet project after years of disagreements between industrial partners, according to German government officials.

The sixth-generation fighter program, valued at around €100 billion ($115 billion), has struggled since its launch in 2017 due to ongoing disputes over leadership, workshare, and design priorities between key contractors Dassault and Airbus. Officials now say the companies involved “cannot reach an agreement,” making continuation of the joint fighter development impossible.

Despite the collapse of the main aircraft project, both countries plan to preserve elements of the broader FCAS concept. The focus will shift toward developing a “system of systems,” including advanced data-sharing networks linking aircraft, drones, and other military platforms into a unified combat structure.

German officials said Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron have agreed to redirect cooperation toward more “realistic and relevant” defense projects. Discussions are expected to continue at a Franco-German ministerial meeting in July, where a revised roadmap for defense industry collaboration will be drafted.

The FCAS program’s breakdown highlights deeper tensions within European defense cooperation, with overlapping ambitions and competing projects. Observers note that Europe’s parallel efforts, including other multinational fighter programs, reflect a lack of coordination in developing next-generation military technology.
