Germany sends troops to the Polish border amid rising fears of Russia
Germany announced that it will send a group of soldiers to Poland to help strengthen the country's eastern border fortifications, amid growing concerns about potential threats from Russia and rising tensions in Eastern Europe.
According to a spokesperson for the German Ministry of Defense in Berlin, the mission of the German forces will be limited to engineering activities only. This will include building fortifications, digging trenches, installing barbed wire, and creating anti-tank obstacles along strategic parts of the border.
The exact number of participating soldiers has not been disclosed, as officials clarified that the number will be within 'dozens of soldiers.' Authorities confirmed that their assigned role will be purely technical and not combat-related. The mission is scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2026 and continue until the end of 2027.
The German government confirmed that this deployment does not require parliamentary approval, as there is no immediate danger to the soldiers from direct military conflict, which places it outside the usual requirements for approval by the federal parliament.
Poland announced in May of last year plans to strengthen its eastern borders, including areas near Belarus and the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad. Since the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Poland has emerged as one of Kyiv's strongest supporters, in addition to being a major transit route for Western military aid.
At the same time, Warsaw has significantly increased its defense spending and accelerated the modernization of its armed forces. For its part, Germany is the second largest provider of military aid to Ukraine after the United States, having supplied Kyiv with equipment including air defense systems and armored vehicles, reflecting Berlin's growing role in European security.
