Dutch police say there are no indications of additional threats to Geert Wilders
Dutch authorities announced that there are no indications of any new or increased threat against Geert Wilders, the leader of the Freedom Party (PVV). The Public Prosecution Service (OM) confirmed to NOS that the police are not investigating any additional threats, following reports published by De Telegraaf.
Wilders announced the suspension of his election campaign last Friday after reports of a potential threat originating from Belgium. Belgian police recently arrested two men suspected of being involved in a terrorist assassination attempt targeting the Prime Minister of Belgium, and according to reports, Wilders' name also appeared on the list of potential targets of the suspects.
In a post on the X platform, Wilders stated that the National Coordinator for Counterterrorism and Security (NCTV) confirmed to him that he was indeed on that list, but he also clarified that the agency does not expect any 'remaining threat' now after the arrest of the suspects.
As a result of these alleged threats, Wilders withdrew from the election debate organized by NOS on NPO Radio 1, as well as from the television debate on RTL last week. NOS reported that Wilders also refused to participate by phone or through video call.
It is still unclear when Wilders will resume his campaign activities or whether he will participate in the upcoming debates. A debate is scheduled on SBS on October 23, while NOS will organize several other debates on October 28, just one day before the national elections.
