The buildings in Amsterdam are illuminated in orange after Lisa's murder

Amsterdam and other Dutch cities united in feelings of sorrow after the murder of young Lisa (17 years old), who was stabbed to death while returning home by bicycle on August 20. A minute of silence was held in Amsterdam, while her town Apeldoorn opened its summer festival with church bells ringing and a collective mourning moment.

Landmarks such as Centraal Station in Amsterdam, Stadsschouwburg Theater, and Erasmus Bridge in Rotterdam were illuminated in orange, the color chosen by the United Nations as a symbol of resistance against violence directed at women. This served as a powerful message of solidarity following the tragedy.

The wave of public support has turned into practical steps. A fundraising campaign under the slogan Wij Eisen de Nacht Op (“Let’s Prepare for the Night”) has raised over 500,000 euros since Monday to enhance the safety of women at night. Lisa's family attended the vigil in Apkaude, which concluded with applause from the attendees, expressing both sorrow and determination.

A spokesperson for the victim support group Namens de Familie said the family was "deeply affected" by the magnitude of the solidarity. He added: "They feel the support and are touched by the deep concern from all the villagers," emphasizing the impact the tragedy has had on the community.

Meanwhile, security investigations are ongoing. A 22-year-old asylum seeker, believed to have been residing in a nearby asylum center, has been arrested on suspicion of killing Lisa and committing two other sexual assaults in recent weeks. Police discovered a knife and a mobile phone during a search near the residence center in Hogehilweg. The suspect appeared in court on Monday, where it was decided to extend his detention for an additional 14 days while investigators continue to verify his identity and gather evidence.
