Bloody traffic tragedies during Easter in Austria
Austria witnessed a sharp increase in traffic accidents during the Easter holiday of 2025, resulting in the deaths of five people and injuries to more than 450 others during Holy Week (Karwoche), marking a significant increase compared to last year.
During the weekend that included "Good Friday" (Karfreitag) to "Easter Monday" (Ostermontag), the police recorded 373 traffic accidents resulting in injuries, an increase of 34.2% compared to the same period in 2024, which saw only 278 accidents. The number of injured rose by 36.8%, from 329 to 450 injured. Meanwhile, three fatalities were recorded during the holiday, a decrease of two from last year, one of whom – a car passenger – died in "Oberösterreich" from his injuries on the morning of April 22.
Despite this significant increase this year, the number of victims is still much lower than in previous years, with the worst toll recorded in 1976 at 39 deaths during the Easter holiday. The lowest toll since documentation began at the Ministry of the Interior (Bundesministerium für Inneres) was in 2013 and 2023, where only one person died in each year.
The police intensified monitoring efforts during the holiday, recording 53,348 speeding violations, a slight increase compared to the previous year. Additionally, 355 drivers were caught driving under the influence of alcohol – an increase of 17.2% – along with 86 drivers under the influence of drugs. Driving licenses were temporarily revoked from 274 individuals, while the police confiscated five vehicles due to serious speeding violations.
Throughout the entire Passion Week, five people died in traffic accidents, including drivers of cars, motorcycles, and tractors, as well as a cyclist. The fatalities were distributed across several roads: two on regional roads (Landesstraßen L), one on a highway (Autobahn), and another on a municipal road (Gemeindestraße). Two deaths occurred in "Oberösterreich", and one in each of "Niederösterreich", "Burgenland", and "Steiermark".
Investigations indicate that the main causes of these accidents were negligence or distraction in three cases, violation of the right of way in one case, and inappropriate speed in another. It is worth noting that four of the fatal accidents were single-vehicle incidents. Since the beginning of the year until April 21, 2025, 85 fatalities have been recorded on Austrian roads, compared to 72 in the same period of 2024.
