Learn about the new increase for KlimaTicket
The Austrian government announced an increase in the price of the "KlimaTicket Ö" starting from the beginning of August, as part of its budgetary control policy and in line with the consumer price index. This is the first adjustment since the card was launched in 2021.
According to the government, this decision is due to the high inflation that the country has witnessed since the introduction of the card. The price index has risen by about 24% since 2021, while the price of the card has only increased by 8% so far. Authorities say this step is necessary to ensure the continuity of the quality of public transport in the country.
Currently, about 330,000 people in Austria use the KlimaTicket Ö, which allows them to travel on public transport in the country without the need to buy daily tickets. The availability of this card is considered a convenient and economical means for many residents.
According to the new plan, the cost of the card will increase by 200 euros by 2026. In the first phase, starting from August 1, 2025, the price of the card will be 1,300 euros (975 euros at a discounted price), and on January 1, 2026, the price will reach 1,400 euros (1,050 euros at a discounted price). This means a daily increase of about 60 cents in total.
The Ministry of Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure clarified that the increase will only apply to new tickets or when renewing existing tickets, and that the date used to determine the price is the start date of the card's validity, not the purchase date. Tickets that become valid before August 1, 2025, will not be affected by the increase.
As for regional tickets, the ministry clarified that its powers are limited to the national card KlimaTicket Ö only, and that the prices of regional tickets used within specific states or regions are managed by state governments and local transport companies, and therefore they are not concerned with the current amendment.
