This is what will change in 2026: a ban on large cash payments and some types of cats
The Netherlands will witness significant changes in 2026 that will affect daily life, finances, and legal matters. Citizens must adapt to new rules including a ban on large cash payments, restrictions on keeping certain types of cats, and a complete ban on consumer fireworks.
As of July 1, 2026, consumers will not be allowed to purchase or use F2 category fireworks, such as firework boxes, ground flowers, and fountains. However, small and decorative fireworks, such as handheld flares, will still be permitted. Authorities are still working on establishing conditions for public fireworks displays and fairly compensating vendors.
Cash payments exceeding 3000 euros will be prohibited starting January 1, and bank cards, bank transfers, or digital payments must be used. This step aims to combat fraud and money laundering. At the same time, the cost of drinking water will increase, and the installation of smart energy meters will become mandatory.
The new regulations will make it easier to employ people with disabilities, requiring companies to hire workers with physical or mental disabilities. Nurseries must also report serious incidents immediately, and cryptocurrency service providers are required to share their customers' data with the tax and customs authorities.
Other changes include reducing points of sale for tobacco products and e-cigarettes, increasing compensation for smoking cessation programs, slowing down mail delivery, imposing harsher penalties for organized crime, and adjustments to taxes, fees, and public service costs. The year 2026 promises wide-ranging impacts on finance, safety, and the daily routines of the people in the Netherlands.
