Explosive Protests Force Asylum Plan Delay in Loosdrecht!

The municipality of Wijdemeren has postponed the opvang van asielzoekers (asylum reception) in the vacant gemeentehuis (town hall) in Loosdrecht after police said they could not guarantee safety due to limited capacity.

Earlier, the Centraal Orgaan opvang asielzoekers (COA, Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers) had announced that the first group of 110 asylum seekers would arrive the same day. However, after urgent consultations between the municipality, police, and the Openbaar Ministerie (Public Prosecution Service), the plan was halted.

Officials stated during an emergency court hearing that police resources are stretched due to upcoming Koningsdag (King’s Day) celebrations. Authorities explained that while the shelter itself does not require hundreds of officers, overall police deployment within the municipality is limited.

Tensions in Loosdrecht have been rising, with demonstrations taking place over two consecutive evenings at the empty town hall. Around 500 people gathered on the first night, where the atmosphere reportedly became hostile. The following evening, a protest organized by Defend Netherlands drew approximately 200 participants.

During both protests, demonstrators threw fireworks, stones, and eggs at police officers and the building, prompting authorities to shut down the gatherings. Eight individuals were arrested on Tuesday, with several already fined while others remain in custody or are awaiting court appearances.
