Fuel Price Shock Triggers Major Petrol Station Inspections Across Vienna
Authorities in Vienna have launched inspections at petrol stations after sharp fuel price increases shocked consumers. The Vienna Market Authority (Marktamt – municipal market authority) has begun checking stations across the city to ensure price changes follow legal regulations.
The inspections target nearly 190 petrol stations in Vienna. Officials are examining whether businesses are applying fuel price changes correctly according to the law. Early findings show that some stations failed to comply with the rules, prompting authorities to issue violations.
During the past week alone, inspectors checked 37 petrol stations. Five citations were issued for breaches of the Price Labeling Act (Preisauszeichnungsgesetz – law requiring clear display of prices). Officials confirmed that the inspections are ongoing and more checks will follow.
The monitoring is based on the Fuel Price Regulation (Treibstoffpreisverordnung – regulation governing fuel prices). According to the rule, petrol stations are allowed to increase fuel prices only once per day, and the change must occur exactly at 12:00 noon. However, stations are permitted to reduce prices at any time during the day.
Authorities say that “without undue delay” means the price adjustment process must begin at noon. If done manually, the change may take about five to ten minutes. For automated systems, the updated prices must appear immediately across the cash register, fuel pump, and price display board to ensure consistency.
Market authority director اندرياس كوتهايل stated that officials cannot stop price increases, but they can ensure businesses follow fair and transparent practices within the law. He emphasized that the authority strictly enforces more than 600 laws and regulations and carried out 135,995 inspections last year.
The data collected during the checks is also sent to E-Control (Austria’s energy regulator). It is then displayed on the online fuel price calculator, allowing consumers to compare fuel prices and find the cheapest options in their area.
Authorities confirmed that inspections of petrol stations across Vienna will continue in the coming weeks as part of efforts to ensure compliance with fuel pricing rules.
