Former ministers call on VVD to join D66 and CDA to form a minority government
Former ministers Roger van Boxtel (Urban Policy, D66) and Cees Veerman (Agriculture, CDA) suggested that VVD join D66 and CDA to discuss forming a minority government. They ruled out the idea of a broad coalition including GroenLinks-PvdA as unrealistic.
Van Boxtel expressed that forming a broad coalition with GroenLinks-PvdA would have been ideal, but he acknowledged that the political reality makes that unlikely. He explained that a minority government could be a practical and effective solution in the current climate, unlike the position of GroenLinks-PvdA leader Jesse Klaver.
Veerman pointed out several concerns regarding cooperation with GroenLinks-PvdA. He mentioned that GroenLinks has moved away from CDA more compared to the old social democratic current. He also emphasized that the merger of the leftist parties is not yet complete, and that the party leader Frans Timmermans recently resigned.
The former ministers confirmed that a minority government can provide flexibility and stability without the complications of a full coalition, especially in light of the ongoing uncertainty in Dutch politics and the difficulties of integrating multiple parties.
Their statements add to the growing discussion about the formation of the future Dutch government, suggesting that smaller coalitions may pragmatically become a viable alternative to traditional majority governments.
