New Missions in Space: ESA Explores Earth's Protective Shield

May 2026 marks an important period for European space travel. The European Space Agency (ESA) has launched several major projects to expand our knowledge of space and our own planet. At the center of this is the new "Smile" mission, which successfully began its journey into space on May 19.

The Smile spacecraft launched early in the morning on a Vega-C rocket from the European spaceport in Kourou. The goal of this mission is to study Earth's invisible protective shield. This magnetic shield protects our planet from the so-called solar wind, which consists of charged particles from the sun. A special feature of this project is the close international cooperation between Europe and China.

After launch, Smile will reach a circular orbit at an altitude of about 700 kilometers. In its first 25 days in space, the spacecraft must fire its engines eleven times to find the correct position. Scientists hope that Smile's data will allow them to observe for the first time exactly what Earth's protective shield looks like in action and how it reacts to solar storms.

In addition to the launch of Smile, there is more news from ESA. On May 20, media representatives were given the rare opportunity to view the "Plato" satellite in a special cleanroom. Plato is known as a "planet hunter" and is intended to search for Earth-like planets outside our solar system in the future. This viewing was one of the last chances to see the satellite's complex technology up close before it is prepared for its mission.

Space agency activities will also continue in June. From June 10 to 14, ESA will participate in the International Aerospace Exhibition (ILA) in Berlin. There, the organization will present its latest technological developments and inform the public about future programs. The fair is an important meeting point for experts and space enthusiasts from all over the world.

These events show how active European space travel is at the moment. Through international cooperation and modern satellite technology, ESA aims to better understand the secrets of the universe. The information gained is not only important for science but also helps us to better assess the effects of space weather on our modern technology on Earth.
