News for today: G7 sanctions against Russia and Hellweg insolvency
The G7 nations are planning to tighten sanctions against Russia, while the German DIY chain Hellweg has filed for insolvency. Additionally, there are discussions regarding new regulations for parental allowance and a relaxation of EU rules for naming marmalade. Personnel changes at the US Federal Reserve could also influence financial markets.
The Group of Seven leading industrial nations (G7) announced tougher sanctions against Russia during a meeting in Évian, France. The focus is particularly on Russian oil and gas exports. The goal is to further limit Russia's revenues. In parallel, an expansion of arms deliveries to Ukraine was promised.
The DIY chain Hellweg has initiated insolvency proceedings under self-administration. Around 2,900 employees across 68 stores are affected by this step, most of them in the Ruhr region. In self-administration, the management remains in office but is supervised by a trustee to restructure the company. Operations in the branches are expected to continue for the time being.
Changes to the legal regulations for parental allowance are facing criticism. Experts and those affected warn that the new requirements could make the equal distribution of childcare between parents more difficult. It is feared that this will primarily result in financial disadvantages for mothers, who continue to perform the majority of care work.
The European Union has adjusted the so-called "Breakfast Directive." In the future, fruit spreads may once again be officially sold as "marmalade" even if they do not consist of citrus fruits such as oranges or lemons. Previously, under EU law, the term marmalade was strictly reserved for citrus products, while other varieties had to be labeled as jam.
A possible change of course by the US Federal Reserve (Fed) is being observed in the financial markets. With Kevin Warsh, a potential new head of the agency is ready, who is seeking radical reforms. Such decisions by the Fed are of global importance, as they significantly influence interest rates and thus the costs of loans and investments.
