Everyone in the Netherlands will receive a new bank card.

2026-03-03

Everyone in the Netherlands will receive a new bank card.

All Dutch banks are replacing old debit cards with new Debit Mastercard and Visa Debit cards to expand payment options and make international transactions easier. The rollout addresses limitations of the old Maestro and V PAY cards, which often caused problems outside Europe.

The new cards allow customers to pay anywhere Mastercard or Visa is accepted, including foreign online stores. They include a 16-digit card number and a CVC or CVV security code, which ING customers can access only through the bank’s app. The cards also support features like deposits for car rentals and setting up recurring payments, though funds are withdrawn directly from accounts, unlike credit cards.

The timing of receiving new cards depends on the bank. ING began replacing soon-to-expire cards last November and expects most customers to have new cards by the end of 2026. Rabobank started in 2024, ABN AMRO in mid-2025, while ASN Bank plans to finish its rollout by October 1. Triodos Bank and Knab have already completed distribution to all their customers.

Security measures remain strong: card codes are on the back and not easily visible, and online transactions often require confirmation through the bank app. This ensures that while payments are more convenient globally, customers maintain control and protection over their accounts.

Unlike credit cards, these debit cards do not offer purchase insurance for theft, loss, or damage, but online transactions are covered by a chargeback system. This allows customers to dispute transactions if products are not delivered, though it does not apply to payments made via iDEAL or Wero. Overall, the new cards aim to combine the convenience of credit cards with the security of direct account payments.
