Price control – here you can buy at the lowest price
Austria is still suffering from a wave of inflation, prompting many families to monitor every euro spent. The Chamber of Labor (Arbeiterkammer - AK) has announced a new initiative aimed at giving consumers more power when shopping for food. In collaboration with partners in Styria and Upper Austria, the chamber is working to create a price comparison portal that shows food prices and their development over time.
The goal of this portal is simple: to help people know where they can buy products at the lowest prices. According to Susanne Bauer from the market research department of the chamber, it is essential for consumers to trust that prices only rise when there are real reasons for it. If not, the chamber is prepared to take legal action. To ensure accuracy, the chamber collaborates with a special comparison portal to monitor prices.
Studies indicate that precise price comparisons can save families up to four percent on grocery bills. However, the ambition of the chamber goes beyond that, as it seeks to establish a complete system for monitoring prices along the supply chain, from farmers and producers to supermarket shelves. Just as Europe ensures food quality 'from farm to table', the chamber believes the same should apply to costs and prices.
This effort will focus specifically on staple products such as meat and milk. By tracking how much farmers actually receive for their products and where prices increase along the chain, the chamber hopes to uncover unfair profits. Transparency is at the heart of the project: people should know where money is being added and whether those increases are justified.
In the end, the Chamber of Labor wants this portal to be more than just a means of saving money for individuals. The larger goal is to expose unjustified price increases, pressure companies to act fairly, and take action against abuses if necessary. At a time when inflation is still heavily impacting families, the chamber sees this tool as a potential real support for Austrian families.
