Warning of Software Errors: Incorrect Medication Dosages Possible

The National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KBV) has issued an important warning for medical practices in Germany. There are technical problems with the software that doctors use in their practices for administration. This software can process information about medications incorrectly, which could be dangerous for patients.

The problem occurs when doctors import the so-called "standardized federal medication plan" (BMP) into their computer system. This plan is an important document that shows exactly which medications a patient must take and what the dosage is. Due to a software error, however, this important data is sometimes transferred incorrectly.

Specifically, this means that the computer program can display an incorrect amount of a medication. If a doctor does not notice this error, the patient might receive a dangerous dose of their medicine. The KBV emphasizes that such transfer errors represent a significant risk to patient safety and must be taken seriously.

The exact reason why this error occurs is currently still being investigated. However, there appears to be a technical problem at the interface between the printed plan and the practice software. The KBV has already informed the software manufacturers so that they can correct the error as quickly as possible through updates.

Until the problem is fully resolved, the KBV advises all doctors to exercise particular caution. They should always manually compare the data imported into the computer system with the printed medication plan once more. Only through this additional check can it be ensured that patients receive the correct treatment.
