Birth Rate Collapse: Germany Hits Historic Low in Shocking Population Crisis

Germany recorded its lowest birth rate since World War II in 2025, with around 655,000 births, marking a sharp decline from the previous year. The growing gap between births and deaths highlights a deepening demographic crisis.

According to Destatis (Statistisches Bundesamt – Federal Statistical Office), more than one million deaths were recorded in the same year, resulting in a birth deficit of approximately 350,000. This marks the fourth consecutive year of declining birth rates in the country.

The fertility rate has dropped to 1.35 children per woman, significantly below the 2.1 level needed to maintain a stable population. Experts attribute this trend to smaller generations born in the 1990s now reaching childbearing age, along with a steady decline in fertility since 2022.

Regional differences remain visible, with eastern German states experiencing a sharper drop in births compared to western regions. Hamburg stood out as the only state to record a slight increase, with birth rates rising by 0.5 percent. Long-term projections suggest Germany’s population could shrink by up to 10 percent by 2070, with immigration unlikely to fully offset the decline.

The Familienverband (German Family Association) described the situation as a “dramatic wake-up call.” Executive Director سيباستيان هايمان criticized long-standing structural issues, arguing that current social policies discourage families from having children and fail to provide adequate support, particularly for parents and mothers.

He warned that the existing social security system, including pensions, does not sufficiently reward child-rearing, leaving many families financially vulnerable. The organization is calling for comprehensive reforms, including stronger family benefits and a revised pension model that better supports future generations.
