New Parental Allowance Burdens Mothers and Schaeffler to Build Drones in the Future
In Germany, changes to the parental allowance are causing discussions about the financial security of families. Meanwhile, the industry is adapting to the crisis: automotive supplier Schaeffler is entering the production of military drones. Additionally, hundreds of millions of euros in fresh capital are flowing into German startups.
The new regulation of the parental allowance – a state support for parents who work less or not at all after the birth of their child – is facing criticism. Experts warn that the new rules could primarily burden mothers and make a fair distribution of childcare more difficult. Fittingly, a new book has been published that provides facts against disinformation to support parents in discussions about such societal changes.
The Franconian automotive supplier Schaeffler is reacting to the economic difficulties in the automotive industry with a new strategy. The company will produce kamikaze drones in the future. These are unmanned aerial vehicles loaded with explosives that are destroyed upon impact with the target. Schaeffler thus becomes another drone manufacturer in Germany.
There are significant investments in the area of young companies. Venture capitalist Capnamic has launched a new fund of 30 million euros for startups in Bremen. In addition, a large growth fund amounting to 865 million euros was started to support established startups in their further expansion. While the Munich-based company tado is reporting black figures for the first time, i.e., making a profit, the tax service provider Taxfix is now expanding its offer to the self-employed.
The European Space Agency (ESA) is expanding its activities in Germany. At the ILA Berlin Air Show, a new space pavilion was opened, bringing research and industry together. Furthermore, ESA has entered into a partnership with Europa-Park to bring the topic of space closer to a broader audience. In international research, it was also announced that ESA astronaut Luca Parmitano has been selected as the pilot for the upcoming Artemis III mission to the Moon.
