“No Longer Acceptable”: Mayors Slam Traffic Chaos from Border Controls

Traffic congestion at key Dutch-German border crossings has increased by 50% over the past year, largely due to intensified German border controls introduced in 2024.

The controls, implemented by Germany to strengthen security and curb undocumented immigration, have significantly impacted traffic on major highways such as the A12 and A1. Drivers now face average delays of 10 to 15 minutes, with longer waiting times during peak travel periods.

According to ANWB (Dutch road users’ association), the congestion increase reflects both longer traffic jams and extended delays. While checks are often carried out outside rush hours, their overall impact has still led to noticeable disruption.

Local authorities in border municipalities have voiced growing frustration. Mayor مارك بومانز of Doetinchem criticized the situation after a serious multi-vehicle accident near Babberich, stating that the controls are causing dangerous conditions and cannot continue without addressing their consequences.

Other municipalities, including Montferland, Zevenaar, and Losser, reported similar issues, such as increased noise, air pollution, unsafe roads for cyclists and pedestrians, and multiple accidents, some of them fatal.

However, not all areas are equally affected. Regions with smaller border crossings, such as Dinkelland and Tubbergen, have reported fewer disruptions, suggesting that the impact is concentrated around major transit routes.
