A new snowstorm raises a nationwide alert
Austria is preparing for another wave of severe winter weather after a powerful snowstorm crippled parts of the country overnight, leading to road closures and flight disruptions.
Heavy snowfall has been recorded along the northern Alps. In the Döbling area of Vienna, about 17 centimeters of new snow fell - an unusually high amount for the region. In the upper parts of Styria (Steiermark), snow accumulations reached half a meter. The upper parts of Styria and several western states also reported heavy rainfall, leading to traffic disruptions and extensive snow removal operations.
The storm has also significantly impacted the infrastructure. Many roads experienced closures and delays, and Vienna International Airport (Flughafen Wien) reported temporary disruptions in flight operations. The increase in fallen trees, damaged power lines, and local power outages has added to the pressure, while emergency and snow removal teams continue to work around the clock.
Meteorologists say that unstable weather will continue in the coming days. While heavy snowfall may lessen, the highlands will remain in a winter state, and rainfall in the lowlands will accelerate the melting of snow. Authorities urge residents to avoid unnecessary travel, stay informed about official warnings, and exercise extreme caution as Austria is still under the influence of unstable and dangerous winter conditions.
