Warning of Errors: Software Displays Incorrect Medication Dosages
The National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KBV) has issued an important warning for medical practices in Germany. There are technical problems with the software used for managing patient data. When doctors digitally scan the nationwide standardized medication plan, errors can occur during the transmission of data.
The problem lies in the process of reading information into the so-called practice management system. The software sometimes fails to transfer data correctly from the paper plan to the computer. This can result in incorrect dosage information. This means that the system displays a different amount of a medication than what the doctor actually prescribed.
These transmission errors pose a risk to patient safety. If a patient receives an incorrect dose, it can have serious health consequences. Utmost caution is required, particularly with medications that must be dosed very precisely. The KBV therefore asks doctors to always carefully compare the scanned data with the original plan.
Software manufacturers have already been informed of the problem and are working on a solution. Until the error is technically resolved, however, increased vigilance is necessary in medical practices. Patients can also contribute by being well-informed about their medications and the correct dosages. If anything on a new prescription seems unclear, they should immediately inquire at the medical practice or the pharmacy.
