Do not beg with animals in Styria
The government of the state of Steiermark announced a new law that prohibits begging using animals, especially dogs, and fines are expected to be imposed on those who violate this decision. The law will allow municipalities to designate no-begging zones in public squares and crowded places.
State Governor Mario Konasik from the FPÖ party said it is time to take clear legal action, adding that this amendment comes to protect animals and regulate public space.
The ban on begging with animals is supported by animal rights organizations such as "RespekTiere" as well as the Animal Protection Commission in Steiermark, both of which have confirmed documented cases of dogs suffering due to poor conditions while begging.
The cities of Graz and Leoben announced plans to impose the first restricted areas in places such as major squares and train stations during May. The new law will be presented to the local parliament soon, and it is scheduled to come into effect on September 1.
