A youth gang instills fear and panic in Vienna

The upscale Döbling district in Vienna is facing increasing turmoil after a violent youth gang has been linked to robberies, vandalism, and assaults. These events have sparked a heated political debate, especially following the release of new crime statistics that have heightened concerns.

According to Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP), 1,001 young suspects were registered in Döbling between 2021 and 2024. Of these, 520 were foreigners and 481 were Austrians. This disparity raises questions, as foreigners make up only 27 percent of Döbling's population, yet they represent more than half of the suspects.

The FPÖ party warned of the worsening crisis, as MP Hubert Fox stated to the Kronen Zeitung that incidents are on the rise and residents feel unsafe. Meanwhile, the local party leader Clemens Reich described the situation as an "additional escalation" and called for more decisive measures.

One of the most concerning incidents occurred in May when a teenager opened fire in a public park. Additionally, robberies and assaults in green spaces such as the Olympic Park, Krimpark, and Hugo Wolf Park have raised more fear among residents. The district mayor, Daniel Reisch (ÖVP), tried to calm tensions, assuring that the situation has improved since summer thanks to increased social work and the deployment of "fair play" teams.

However, the FPÖ party sees these measures as insufficient. The party demands the establishment of a special force to combat youth gangs, an increase in police patrols in parks, and the systematic deportation of foreigners involved in crimes. This debate puts Vienna to a difficult test between security, social integration, and political pressures.
