Waste of money – The Freedom Party FPÖ attacks the Tram World Cup

Vienna is preparing to host the Tram World Cup this Saturday, where 25 teams from six continents will compete in front of the famous city hall. Tram drivers will be tested in areas including precise stopping and precise braking. Organizers expect around 50,000 visitors, while international fans will be able to follow the event via live streaming. In addition to the championship, a public transport festival will be held showcasing the services of Wiener Linien, along with food stalls and a dedicated children's program.

But while the city celebrates the event, the Freedom Party (FPÖ) has issued sharp criticisms. The party accused Olli Sima, a member of the Vienna City Council from the Social Democratic Party (SPÖ) and responsible for the transportation sector, and Wiener Linien of organizing a "self-promotion show" at the expense of taxpayers. It considered that the money spent on the championship – including the costs of the stage, live broadcasting, and international guests – is being wasted at a time when residents are forced to pay more for public transportation.

The spokesperson for the FPÖ on utilities, Clemens Riehs, described the event as nothing more than "bread and circus." He pointed to the anticipated increase in Wiener Linien ticket prices for 2026, where the annual subscription will reach 467 euros (for a one-time payment) or 506 euros (for monthly payment). He also condemned the cancellation of the single ticket for seniors, considering it an additional burden on vulnerable groups.

Regarding the FPÖ party, the timing of the event reflects misplaced priorities. Riech stated that "millions are wasted on a completely useless show," while ordinary citizens are asked to pay more for basic transportation services. He emphasized that the feasibility of the championship remains in doubt, especially with rising prices.

Reich announced plans to submit an official inquiry to council member Oli Sima after the event, demanding full disclosure of the costs, contracts, and justifications behind hosting the championship, emphasizing that the city's resources should be directed towards alleviating the financial burdens on residents instead of organizing large-scale events.
