"Foreigners go home" chant sparks anger among students in Austria
Racist slogans, including the chant "Foreigners go home!", caused a disruption at the student Christmas party at Johannes Kepler University (JKU) in Linz, Austria. This incident follows previous abuses of music to convey anti-foreigner hate messages, which immediately angered the student union.
The Austrian Students' Association (ÖH), which organized the event, condemned this behavior, emphasizing that far-right hate speech has no place in university activities, and promised to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.
University advisor Stefan Koch expressed his complete rejection, emphasizing that the university is a place for diversity, and he affirmed his full support for achieving student union, pledging to prevent the recurrence of such incidents in the future.
ÖH has already started collecting witness statements and plans to file a formal complaint. Deputy Verena Eheringrober confirmed cooperation with the Chancellor's office and ongoing efforts to gather evidence, including video footage, although nothing usable has been obtained so far.
Preventive measures are being considered to avoid the recurrence of these incidents in the future. Both the university and the student union are discussing additional steps to ensure a safe and inclusive environment for all students, with authorities actively involved in the investigation.
