Germany set to miss long-term climate targets again

Germany is set to miss its long-term climate targets once again, according to a new projection report that raises serious doubts about the country’s ability to meet its 2030 emissions goals.

The 2026 Projection Report, prepared by the Öko-Institut (Institute for Applied Ecology) together with other research organizations on behalf of the Federal Environment Agency (Umweltbundesamt / UBA), shows that Germany will fall short of its planned greenhouse gas reduction targets.

According to the findings, Germany is expected to reduce its CO₂ emissions by only about 63 percent by 2030 compared to 1990 levels, which is not enough to meet the country’s official climate commitments. This gap highlights ongoing structural challenges in energy transition and industrial emissions.

The report suggests that despite significant investments in renewable energy and climate protection measures, progress is still too slow in key sectors such as transport, buildings, and heavy industry. These areas continue to produce high emissions, limiting overall national progress.

Climate experts warn that repeated failure to meet targets could undermine Germany’s credibility in international climate policy and increase pressure on the government to introduce stronger and potentially more controversial measures in the coming years.
