Dutch Government Moves to Implement Fatbike Rules as Safety Concerns Rise

The Dutch government, led by Minister فنسنت كاريماس of Infrastructure and Water Management, is working on implementing new rules specifically for fatbikes. This includes establishing a minimum age for riders and making helmets mandatory for anyone under 18, as reported by RTL Nieuws.

At the unveiling of his “Fatbike Approach,” كاريماس acknowledged that many details are still uncertain. He has not yet disclosed what the age limit will be or when he plans to extend the helmet mandate to teenagers.

While laying out the goals for the upcoming years, the specific timelines and methods of implementation remain vague. The Minister has also announced plans to hire a research firm to help create separate regulations exclusively for fatbikes, a challenge that previous governments had considered nearly impossible.

Cities like Amsterdam and Enschede have already taken action by imposing bans on fatbikes in certain areas, using tire thickness as a defining characteristic. This has led to a sudden spike in demand for what are termed "skinnybikes," fatbikes with thinner tires.

كاريماس believes that having a clear definition will facilitate city ordinances to exclude these bicycles from problematic areas. He cautioned against waiting for a perfect definition, stating that this leads to unnecessary delays. “Doing nothing is not an option, because that has no effect whatsoever on road safety,” he emphasized.
