The Netherlands joins global efforts to secure the Strait of Hormuz
The Netherlands has announced its willingness to join international efforts to protect commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, following Iran’s blockade amid escalating conflict in the region.
A joint statement issued by several countries, including the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan, strongly condemned Iran’s actions. The countries stated that the blockade violates international law and United Nations resolutions, while also expressing serious concern over the growing tensions.
The statement called on Iran to immediately stop threats, including laying mines and launching drone and missile attacks targeting commercial vessels. It warned that disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz (Straat van Hormuz – key global oil shipping route) are affecting people worldwide, particularly vulnerable populations.
Although the countries expressed readiness to ensure safe passage through the route, no clear timeline or operational plan for a joint mission has been announced. The statement emphasized ongoing preparations and coordination among participating nations.
Dutch Prime Minister روب جيتن indicated that while the Netherlands supports protecting its European partners, it is cautious about direct military involvement. He described deploying forces as too risky, stressing that the Netherlands is not part of the conflict but remains open to contributing if a clear mission request emerges.
