Trump Orders Massive US Troop Withdrawal from Duitsland (Germany), Sparking Global Alarm
US President Donald Trump has announced the withdrawal of 5,000 active-duty troops from Germany within six to twelve months, marking a significant shift in American military strategy and escalating tensions with European allies.
The decision follows a public dispute with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who criticised Washington’s handling of the US-Israeli war in Iran and accused the United States of being “humiliated” by Iranian leadership. Trump had earlier warned he would reduce troop presence in response to Germany’s stance.
According to Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell, the move comes after a comprehensive review of US military positioning in Europe, taking into account operational requirements and current conditions. Germany currently hosts key US facilities, including Ramstein Air Base, Landstuhl medical centre, and headquarters for American European and Africa commands.
The withdrawal represents roughly 14 percent of the more than 36,000 US troops stationed in Germany. Critics, particularly Democrats in Congress, have strongly opposed the decision, warning it could weaken US alliances and benefit Russian President Vladimir Putin. Senator Jack Reed described the move as reckless and urged immediate reconsideration.
Trump has long expressed frustration with NATO allies and has previously threatened similar withdrawals during his first term, though those plans were never implemented. With ongoing global instability and the continuing conflict involving Iran, analysts warn that reducing US forces in Europe could have serious consequences for regional and international security.
