Germany sends navy ships to Red Sea ahead of possible Hormuz mine-clearing mission

Germany has sent two navy ships toward the Red Sea as preparations begin for a possible mine-clearing mission in the Strait of Hormuz, signaling growing concern over security in one of the world’s most critical shipping routes.

Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced that the minesweeper Fulda and the supply ship Mosel are currently passing through the Suez Canal en route to the Red Sea. He described the deployment as a precautionary move designed to ensure Germany can respond quickly if an international mission is launched.

Speaking ahead of a NATO defense ministers’ meeting in Brussels, Pistorius said the early deployment is meant to reduce response time in case the situation escalates. According to him, Germany wants to be fully prepared to act swiftly and reach the Strait of Hormuz without delay if required.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the most strategically important waterways in the world, serving as a key route for global oil and gas shipments. Any disruption in the area could have major consequences for international trade and energy markets, making security operations there highly sensitive.

Pistorius emphasized that Germany is willing to contribute militarily to protect freedom of navigation in the region. However, he clarified that any formal deployment would depend on international agreements and approval from Germany’s parliament.

The defense minister added that a mission could move forward if the United States and Iran reach an agreement on operational details and if an international mandate is issued, either by the United Nations or the European Union. Only after those conditions are met would the German government seek parliamentary authorization for military participation.

Germany’s move comes amid rising geopolitical tensions in the Gulf, and the deployment is already being viewed as a strong signal that Berlin is preparing for rapid action if the regional crisis intensifies.
