Thieves steal the entire cannabis stock from a legal farm in Hilversum.
A legal cannabis farm in Hilversum was robbed on Sunday morning, with thieves stealing the entire cannabis stock. The farm is one of ten farmers participating in the Dutch government's experiment to regulate the cultivation and sale of cannabis.
According to the police, the robbery occurred at a nursery on Middelweg while employees were present. Fortunately, no one was injured. Authorities suspect the involvement of two individuals, but no clear descriptions have been provided, and it is unknown whether the workers were threatened with weapons.
The farm is participating in an experiment that started in the fall of 2023, where only regulated cannabis sales are allowed in ten municipalities. In the municipality of Voorne aan Zee, which includes Hellevoetsluis, the previously tolerated cannabis is no longer allowed, making this experiment the only legal channel.
The facility had faced criticism from local residents due to strong odors. Nearly three hundred complaints were filed, and earlier this month, the court ruled that the company must put an end to these nuisances.
The police have opened an investigation into the robbery, as the incident raises questions about the security risks surrounding the government's cannabis experiment.
