A deputy from the Alternative Party sparks a racist scandal ahead of a women's match
As millions follow the Women's European Championship with enthusiasm, hoping that the German women's national team will achieve their ninth title, a racist statement has polluted the sports atmosphere. Before the match between Germany and Poland, politician Daniel Wald from the 'Alternative für Deutschland' (AfD) party sparked a storm of anger after posting a racist comment on platform X (formerly Twitter).
The issue began when Wald posted a response to a picture of the national team, using a racist term offensive to black people, referring to the absence of players of African descent. He specifically wrote: "Yes, the German women's team without N****in," and added clapping emojis to his post. Although his account and the comment were later deleted, the criticism did not stop.
This behavior did not go without consequences. The party "Die Linke" (The Left) decided to respond legally, as Eva von Angern, the leader of the parliamentary group of the Left in Saxony-Anhalt, filed a criminal complaint against Wald. She accused him of promoting national hatred and glorifying the colonial past. She stated that the AfD party uses football championships to promote its extremist agendas at the expense of the players. Daniel Wald, known for his affiliation with the far-right wing of the AfD in Saxony-Anhalt, has been under surveillance by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution since November 2023, which classified him as a "confirmed far-right entity." Nevertheless, the AfD parliamentary group stated that the incident was discussed internally and considered resolved after the comment was deleted.
However, the discontent continues, especially on social media. Many accuse the AfD of making racism acceptable in public life. Eva von Angern believes that Wald's statements reflect not only racism but also hatred towards women, pointing out that such actions aim to divide society and sow hatred.
In contrast, the AfD is trying to mitigate the impact of the scandal, which observers see as part of a recurring pattern for the party: crossing boundaries to provoke controversy and gain attention. Meanwhile, the Left Party asserts that this behavior harms both politics and society.
