Driving License: A new rule will soon be implemented for drivers

Camping and recreational vehicle enthusiasts in Europe can look forward to more freedom on the roads soon. The European Union has approved a new regulation allowing holders of regular driving licenses to drive much heavier camping vehicles than previously allowed. This rule aims to facilitate travel and make it more appealing to a broader range of drivers, especially younger ones.

Under the new regulation, which will come into effect in 2028, drivers holding a category (B) license will be able to drive vehicles weighing up to 4.25 tons, whereas the previous maximum was only 3.5 tons. According to the German Automobile Club ADAC, this change will expand the options available for travelers who prefer larger and more comfortable vehicles.

However, this new rule will not apply to those who obtained their driving licenses before 1999, as the old laws will still be in effect for them. New drivers will benefit from this change, as they will be able to drive more types of camping vehicles that previously required a category (C1) license. ADAC expert Steven Hibsch explained that raising the limit 'increases the flexibility of the allowed load' and makes the camping experience more appealing to young drivers.

Despite the European Union's decision, each member state can impose additional conditions, such as extra training or a short test before allowing drivers to operate vehicles weighing up to 4.25 tons. Germany has not yet announced how it will implement this rule or whether it will impose additional requirements.

The new rule will not affect current traffic laws, as speed limits and road tolls will remain the same for vehicles over 3.5 tons — including the speed limit of 100 km/h on highways and higher road tolls. However, experts believe that this change will have a significant positive impact on the recreational vehicle industry, as it will allow companies to add more amenities and modern technology, and expand the development of electric and hybrid vehicles without worrying about strict weight restrictions.
