Austria is "no longer a target" for illegal immigration, says the Interior Minister
Austrian Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) stated that Austria is no longer a major destination for illegal immigration, pointing to the success of a long-standing border security initiative. The program known as Operation Fox has been implemented along the border between Burgenland and Hungary since December 2022.
According to Karner, the operation has significantly contributed to reducing the number of illegal migrants attempting to enter Austria through this route. He attributed this to increased patrols, tightened inspection procedures, and close cooperation with Hungarian authorities.
The minister clarified that this initiative has not only disrupted smuggling networks but has also sent a clear message that Austria will not tolerate illegal crossings. He emphasized that the country's borders are now being monitored more strictly than ever before.
Karner pointed out that the Fox operation procedures were accompanied by stricter asylum policies, making Austria less attractive to those trying to enter without legal justifications. He considered that the country's stance is essential for protecting public security and maintaining order.
While the government sees this operation as successful, the issue of immigration remains a sensitive topic in Austria, where discussions continue on how to balance border security with humanitarian responsibilities.
