Vienna raises fines – anyone who parks their car this way will pay 467 euros
In Vienna, drivers who obstruct tram or bus traffic due to random parking will face much harsher fines. Starting in 2026, the fine will increase to 467 euros — equivalent to the price of an annual public transport ticket — in addition to any costs incurred if emergency services or towing companies need to intervene.
Currently, public transport in the Austrian capital is disrupted about 1500 times a year due to cars parked close to tram tracks. When this happens, trams cannot pass or turn. If the driver cannot be found quickly, the fire brigade has to intervene to clear the road, leading to significant delays in the network.
The fine has seen a significant previous increase in recent years. In 2023, it rose from 128 to 365 euros, which is also equivalent to the price of an annual ticket. Alexandra Reinagl, the managing director of Wiener Linien, confirmed that the amount will increase further in the coming period as part of the city's efforts to deter violators.
These blockages occur particularly on certain tram lines such as lines 9, 40, 41, and 42. To address this issue, the city of Vienna is not only increasing fines but is also working on redesigning some areas by widening sidewalks or replacing parking spaces with green areas.
Officials hope that strict penalties and re-planning measures will keep trams, buses, and the metro in Vienna running smoothly. For the majority of Vienna's residents who rely on public transport daily, these steps are seen as necessary to prevent long delays caused by a few irresponsible drivers.
