Airport police discover bags filled with 32 kg of cannabis
Police at Vienna-Schwechat Airport made a major drug seizure early Friday morning after discovering large quantities of cannabis during a routine baggage inspection.
Officers from the Stadtpolizeikommando Schwechat (Schwechat City Police Command), along with the Kriminaldienst (Criminal Investigation Department) and Grenzpolizei (Border Police Unit), found two suitcases containing a total of 32 kilograms of cannabis during checks of transit luggage.
The baggage had arrived on a flight from Bangkok, Thailand, and was scheduled to continue to Frankfurt, Germany. During the inspection, authorities discovered that the suitcases were filled with cannabis packages hidden inside the luggage.
Police identified the luggage as belonging to a 39-year-old Dutch citizen, who was preparing to board the connecting flight to Frankfurt. Officers detained the suspect at the airport and confiscated the drugs.
During questioning, the man refused to give a statement. Following orders from the Staatsanwaltschaft Korneuburg (Korneuburg Public Prosecutor’s Office), the suspect was taken into custody and transferred to the Justizanstalt Korneuburg (Korneuburg correctional facility) while investigations continue.
