The European Union imposes a fee of 3 euros on each package: shopping from abroad has become more expensive

European Union finance ministers have agreed to impose an import fee of 3 euros on all parcels coming from outside the EU, including purchases from Chinese online stores. Currently, customs duties only apply to parcels valued over 150 euros. This measure is set to take effect in all member states in November of next year, aiming to reduce the large volume of incoming parcels to the EU.

In the Netherlands, consumers may face an additional processing fee of 2 euros per product. This means that a package containing one item will become more expensive by 5 euros, while a package containing three different items may increase in price by 15 euros. Authorities are considering implementing the measure starting January 1, although final approval from the cabinet is still required.

The Minister of State for Finance and Customs, Eugene Heingen, welcomed the decision, describing it as "very effective" given the huge volume of parcels coming to Europe. He confirmed that the fee of 3 euros will apply to each individual product starting from July. For example, if the order includes a pair of socks, a charging cable, and Christmas lights, consumers will incur an additional fee of 9 euros on top of the product prices.

The European Commission had originally planned to implement these fees in 2028, but some member states pushed for an earlier start to address growing concerns about parcel movement. The Netherlands is seeking to coordinate the implementation with other countries to ensure smoother and more consistent enforcement across borders.

The new fees are expected to significantly impact online shoppers, especially those purchasing low-cost small items from outside the European Union. This measure aims not only to increase revenue but also to manage the logistical and environmental pressures resulting from the flow of international parcels.
