CEO resignation and closure of 400 stores: KiK faces a major crisis

The low-cost clothing store chain KiK in Germany is facing a major crisis that could lead to the closure of hundreds of its branches. According to reports from Immobilien Zeitung, the company may have to close around 400 stores out of the 2,400 it owns in Germany. This means that one in every six stores is at risk of closure, leaving thousands of employees worried about their future.

Although the company has not officially confirmed these figures, it has acknowledged that it is in the process of reviewing its store network. A spokesperson told the German news agency (dpa) that the closures will primarily affect unprofitable branches. At the same time, the company emphasized that it remains stable and that management is working on a long-term restructuring plan.

To mitigate the impact on employees, KiK announced that it will offer affected workers alternative opportunities within the company where possible. It also revealed plans to update existing stores and launch a new concept for all branches by 2028. However, the company has not yet announced which stores will close or what the details of the new design will be.

These developments come at a time when the company is undergoing leadership changes. CEO Patrick Tsang resigned on September 4 after eleven years of leading the company. According to reports, his resignation was due to strategic disagreements with the company's owner, Christian Haub, over how to handle declining sales. Shortly before that, Chief Operating Officer Dirk Ankenbrand also officially left his position for personal reasons.

Despite these disruptions, KiK reaffirms its commitment to remain competitive in the challenging retail market. The company hopes that its restructuring, modernization plans, and management changes will provide a new boost to secure its future in Germany.
