-11 degrees Celsius: Severe cold expected in Vienna
Vienna is preparing for a new wave of severe cold, with warnings from meteorological experts about a sharp drop in temperatures. New forecasts extending for 14 days indicate that the city may soon experience severe winter conditions, with no signs of a significant rise in temperatures.
Following the recent icy disturbances, weather experts confirm that the cold will continue and even worsen. According to meteorologist Clemens Grohs from Kachelmannwetter, frozen air masses coming from Eastern Europe will intensify the severe winter, despite expectations of sunny periods.
The peak of the cold is expected to arrive in late January. Nighttime temperatures in Vienna may drop to around minus 11 degrees Celsius on January 24, while daytime temperatures may remain below minus 6 degrees. However, forecast models still indicate a margin of variability.
The likelihood of hazardous conditions is increasing, especially due to black ice. The Severe Weather Center (UWZ) warns of cold air getting trapped in low-lying areas, with easterly winds potentially bringing freezing drizzle, leading to slippery roads in the eastern regions.
The phenomenon of fog and high fog will continue in many low-lying areas, while regions extending from Waldviertel through the Vienna Basin to southern Burgenland may experience light snow showers or freezing drizzle. Strong southeast winds and foehn winds near the Alps may cause temporary changes before the cold intensifies again.
