Frozen Wake-Up: See Where Temperatures Dropped Below Zero in Austria Today

Many Austrians woke up on the morning of Saturday, October 4, 2025, to a biting cold, with temperatures in some areas dropping below zero, marking one of the coldest early October mornings. According to the Severe Weather Center in Austria (Unwetterzentrale Österreich), the "start of the day was completely frozen," especially from Salzburg eastward. Meteorologists explained that light frost covered several areas, and a map published online showed the extent of the cold the country experienced overnight.

Temperatures below zero were recorded in Graz, Vienna, and Linz, while cities like St. Pölten and Klagenfurt experienced freezing temperatures close to zero. In Linz, Salzburg, and Eisenstadt, temperatures remained just above zero, giving residents an early glimpse of winter before sunrise.

The map published by UBIMET showed the lowest temperatures between midnight and 5:40 AM, highlighting the clear difference between the cold east and the mild west. While the eastern regions were shivering from the cold, Bregenz and Innsbruck remained noticeably warmer. In Bregenz, the temperature did not drop below +9 degrees Celsius, and in Innsbruck, the lowest temperature was around +5 degrees Celsius — a relatively 'comfortable' atmosphere compared to the rest of the country.

Meteorologists explained that this variation is due to the approach of a warm front associated with a low-pressure system known as Detlef. The experts said: "The warm front is knocking on the doors in the west and will gradually extend to the rest of Austria throughout the day." This means that residents can expect a noticeable rise in temperatures in the coming hours.

By midday, experts from GeoSphere Austria expect temperatures to rise significantly, reaching around 21 degrees Celsius in some areas. After a freezing morning, this improvement in the weather will be a welcome change — a reminder of how quickly autumn weather in Austria can shift from frost to warmth in just a few hours.
